We have listed a few frequently asked questions along with the answers on this page. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have a question or concern that is not detailed below. We are always on hand to respond to your enquiries.

What is a fault code?
A fault code is a fault that has shown up on your vehicles computer (ECU). This is sent in a code form.

How do I know if I have a fault?
Normally the lights on your vehicle dashboard go out after a few seconds of starting the engine. If any stay on permanently during your drive, you have a fault.

Does your equipment fix the fault?
No. It will locate the fault codes and tell you exactly what is faulty. (I.E; Airbag sensor, A.B.S sensor, traction control). We can delete them from the ECU’s memory, but in most cases if the fault hasn’t been fixed, the light will return.

Why not just take it to a garage?
Yes, it is sometimes easier to do that, but the garage will charge on average £60-£80 for the fault to be read from the ECU. They will then charge you for the part needed and labour to fit the part (normally one hour of labour minimum). The sensors in most cases are attached to the car by one bolt and a small electrical wire, which you unplug. So if you service your own vehicle, then sensors are really easy to change. Therefore, saving you money and allowing you to sort the problem at your own home.

So what next?
Once Car Butler has identified the fault, you can replace the faulty part or sensor. The fault light may stay on until we come and delete the ECU memory again. This time with the new part or sensor, the fault light should stay off.

What about service lights?
We can switch those off for you – no problem.

Is there anything else you offer?
We also offer a service that limits your top speed (perfect for new drivers), vans and cars etc. We can switch off your passenger airbags (for child seats etc). Some main dealers will charge £100+ just for this service!
